How I Spent a 48 Hour Staycation in New Orleans

A solo trip to New Orleans was something I didn’t know I needed until I got there, and everything was just what I needed in that moment.

If you’re also looking for a quick getaway but prefer to stay closer to home, check out my guide on staycations in Houston.

I haven’t been to NOLA since 2022, and one thing I missed the most was the food! You can’t beat the Cajun food and the vibes that New Orleans brings. I really wanted to do a food tour, pick 5-6 places, and just eat, eat, eat, lol!

I planned out my trip accordingly. I only had 48 hours, so I wanted to make the best of my time while I was there and still make room for some me-time.

The Road trip from Houston to New Orleans

I decided to take the bus to New Orleans because, girl, I did not want to drive. Five to six hours on the road by myself? Yeah, no, I was not having it. So, I took the Greyhound and the Flix Bus from Houston, and it was only $99 round trip!

Much cheaper than driving, and I got to relax on the bus! This was a win for me. Honestly, I would highly recommend taking the bus to NOLA if you are in Houston. It was a smooth ride, and we got there on time or a little before time. Plus, it gave me the chance to read, listen to music, and even catch up on some sleep.

Must-Try Food Stops: Boudin at In-Laws Cajun Specialties

On my way to NOLA, we had three stops: Lafayette, Lake Charles, and Baton Rouge. When we stopped at Lake Charles, we had a 10-minute break. It was super early in the morning, and I was hungry, so the driver suggested this mom-and-pop shop to try out their boudin. Apparently, they had REALLY good boudin. So, I decided to go try it out.

Honestly, I can’t remember if I have ever tried boudin, but I was on a mission to see what the hype was all about. The restaurant is called “In-Laws Cajun Specialties.” They serve all types of boudin, such as crawfish boudin, pepper jack boudin, turkey wings, and so much more.

I ended up getting the pepper jack boudin, and I have to say it was so GOOD! OMG. It’s like a flavored rice ball coated in yummy breading. I really enjoyed it, and it was a great start to what I’d be eating in NOLA!

Arrival in New Orleans

The journey continues, and we are on the road. The ride wasn’t bad at all. We left at 7:20 am and arrived at the Greyhound station at 1:50 pm!

Now it’s time to check into the hotel.

Arriving in Style: The Eliza Jane Hotel Review

I stayed at The Eliza Jane Hotel, and girl, this hotel was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Like, literally, my mouth dropped to the floor. This hotel is beyond aesthetically pleasing. When you walk in, you’re greeted with beautiful pink and gold decor.

Exploring the City

Once I settled into my room, I immediately went out to get some food! I really wanted to hit up like five spots, lol, so let’s see where I stopped.

The first stop on my tour was Loretta’s New Orleans Authentic Pralines & Beignets. I wanted to stop here because, I mean, everyone was raving about it on TikTok about how good it was, so I wanted to see for myself. Usually, I’d go to Cafe Du Monde for beignets, so I was really excited to see if Loretta’s lived up to the hype.

Loretta’s is located inside the French Market. The French Market is filled with many different food options and souvenir shops.

As my 48 hours in New Orleans came to an end, I felt a sense of fulfillment and joy. The city had given me exactly what I needed: great food, beautiful sights, and a memorable adventure. I boarded the bus back to Houston with a happy heart and a promise to return soon.
